Robert Shanks, known as Ralph Shanks during his baseball career, was born at Hannah, N.D. in 1898. He served in World War I and attended Dakota Business College in Fargo, N.D. In Fargo he played with the Fargo Athletics, Moorhead Athletics and the Fargo-Moorhead Twins baseball teams in the 1920s. He later worked for the IRS in Fargo.
